Maine retired his number 19 in honor of Montgomery as he finished his career at the University with 301 points on 103 goals and 198 assists, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer.

After college, the St. Louis Blues signed Montgomery in 1993. He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in the next season. However, the Canadiens released him after just 5 games as things didn't work out between the player and the Canadiens.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed him later in the year and he played in 8 regular season contests and 7 playoff contests with the team.

Jim played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany with the Philadelphia Phantoms for two years beginning the 1996-97 season. During the 1999-2000 season, he played for the Phantoms and the Manitoba Moose.

Montgomery signed with the San Jose Sharks in 2000. He played 28 games with the Sharks in the 2000-01 season. The Dallas Stars signed him in the next year, with whom he played only 9 games over two years as he was playing for the Utah Grizzlies.

He spent one year playing in Russia and another year with the Missouri River Otters. He retired from his professional playing career in 2005.
