Boston Bruins Head Coach
Jim Montgomery is the head coach of the Boston Bruins. The former Canadian player has also served the Dallas Stars in the same position.
Montgomery became an All-Star 3 times in a row in the years 1991, 1992, and 1993. He was named NCAA tournament championship MVP when he captained the University of Maine to a record of 42-1-2 and the 1993 National Championship.
Maine retired his number 19 in honor of Montgomery as he finished his career at the University with 301 points on 103 goals and 198 assists, becoming the school's all-time leading scorer.
After college, the St. Louis Blues signed Montgomery in 1993. He was traded to the Montreal Canadiens in the next season. However, the Canadiens released him after just 5 games as things didn't work out between the player and the Canadiens.
The Philadelphia Flyers signed him later in the year and he played in 8 regular season contests and 7 playoff contests with the team.
Jim played in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) in Germany with the Philadelphia Phantoms for two years beginning the 1996-97 season. During the 1999-2000 season, he played for the Phantoms and the Manitoba Moose.
Montgomery signed with the San Jose Sharks in 2000. He played 28 games with the Sharks in the 2000-01 season. The Dallas Stars signed him in the next year, with whom he played only 9 games over two years as he was playing for the Utah Grizzlies.
He spent one year playing in Russia and another year with the Missouri River Otters. He retired from his professional playing career in 2005.
Jim Montgomery Coaching Career
Montgomery started his coaching career as an assistant coach for Notre Dame for the 2005–06 season.
The University of Denver selected Montgomery as head coach of its Pioneers men's ice hockey team. Pioneers reached the Frozen Four in 2016. The team won the championship title in 2017.
Dallas Stars (2018-19)
Jim was selected as the head coach of the Dallas Stars on May 4, 2018. The Stars reached their first playoffs in three years as Jim led the team.
The Stars fired Montgomery on December 10, 2019, quoting "unprofessional conduct inconsistent with the core values and beliefs of the Dallas Stars and the NHL."
St. Louis Blues (2020 - 2022)
Montgomery signed a two-year contract with the St. Louis Blues on September 16, 2020, serving as an assistant coach under Craig Berube.
Boston Bruins (2022 - Present)
Jim was selected as the head coach of the Boston Bruins replacing Bruce Cassidy in June 2022. He led to major improvements in the team for the 2022–23 season. The Bruins completed the season with a 65–12–5 record and 135 points.
The Bruins were awarded the Presidents' Trophy and Montgomery won the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year. The Bruins franchise also played in the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs.
