How many Canadian players on Montreal Canadiens? There are 21 Canadian players on the Montreal Canadiens as per their roster in 2023.  

Montreal Canadiens is the oldest hockey team in the National Hockey League and one of the oldest sports franchises to continue till now. The Canadiens are one of the teams of Original Six. They were the only teams to play in the NHL from 1942 to 1967.

Some great Canadian players in history who played for the Montreal Canadiens are Maurice Richard, Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard, Doug Harvey, and Jacques Plante.

More than 80 Goaltenders and 777 skaters have played at least one regular season with the team since the formation of the League. Most of them; are Canadian-born players, as the franchise was founded in Quebec, Canada.

Mostly, Canadian-born players have occupied the team since 1909. Patric Jacques Roy, born in Canada, was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history and played for the Montreal Canadiens from 1984-1995.

One of the best goaltenders born in Canada, Carry, was not seen on the ice in the season 2022-23. Price had to undergo some more treatments and surgery.

Nick Suzuki s a Canadian born professional Ice hockey center. He is serving as the captain of the Canadiens.

Suzuki was drafted by the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round as 13th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He was traded with Max Pacioretty from the  Montreal Canadiens.

In 2021-22, Suzuki was an alternate captain who just succeeded previous captain Shea Weber to become the 31st captain in the team's history.

Hab's captain is the youngest captain (at 23) the team has ever made. Before him, Sylvio Mantha was the youngest captain (at 24) beginning the 1926-27 season.

Suzuki signed an 8-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens, including a $10,000,014 signing bonus. He will be paid $63,000,000 guaranteed with an annual average salary of $7,875,000.

Nick played 82 games in the season with 26 goals and 40 assists in NHL 2023 regular season.

Joel Edmundson

Joel Edmundson plays defense for the Montreal Canadiens. He has played games for the St. Loiuis Blues and Carolina Hurricanes.

Edmundson played junior ice hockey with his hometown team, the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was selected by the Moose Jaw Warriors as 121st overall in the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft. 

Eventually, He was drafted 46th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues. He first played for its affiliate team, the Chicago Wolves before making his debut in NHL.

He was on the St. Louis Blues roster in 2015 and won the Stanley Cup in 2019. 

Edmundson was traded to the Montreal Canadiens and signed a four-year $14 million contract. Edmundson reached the Stanley Cup Final with the team but lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game-5.

Brendan Gallagher

Brendan Gallagher is an alternate captain and an ice hockey winger for the Montreal Canadiens. He is a right shooter and plays for the Canadiens in NHL since he got drafted by the team.

Gallagher was selected 147th overall, in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. Gallagher spent his junior career with the Vancouver Giant.

He was awarded WHL West First All-Star Team honors in the 2010-11 season. Brendan became his team's all-time leading goal and point scorer. 

Brendan competed in the 2012 IIHF U20 Championship with Canada and won a gold medal at the 2016 IIHF World Championships.

Gallagher was discussed to make him the new captain after Shea Weber but was given to Nick Suzuki instead.

Brendan Gallagher has played 11 seasons for the Canadians as of 2023. He has played 675 games scoring 202 goals and 193 assists.

Montreal Canadiens coach and general manager

Montreal Canadiens coach is Martin St. Louis. Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes becomes the 18th in the Canadiens' history. 

Newsy Lalonde was the first NHL head coach of the Canadiens in 1917 when the team entered the League. He coached the team for five years and handed it to Leo Dandurnad.

There have been 27 NHL head coaches for the team till now, Martin being the 27th one. He has just started to coach the team in 2022.

Martin St. Louis is the 32nd head coach for the Montreal Canadiens. If only NHL coaches are considered then he would become 27th.

He was first named interim head coach on February 9, 2022, and took over the responsibility from Dominique Ducharme. 

St. Louis has collected 1,022 career points with 391 goals and 642 assists in 1,134 regular games before starting coaching. He has played with the Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, and New York Rangers.

He was enlisted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2018 and has achieved several awards, such as the Hart Trophy in 2004, the Art Ross Trophy in 2004, and 2014. 

Kent Hughes (General Manager)

Kent Hughes signs a five-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens as the General Manager. Kent Hughes is born in Montreal and is 52 years old as of 2023.

Hughes was an ice hockey player before he leaned onto the job of executive.  Hughes came in contact with Jeff Gorton who was working for the Boston Bruins.

Gorton became the manager of the New York Rangers and tried to recruit Hughes to work with him but declined. When Gorton was hired by the Montreal Canadiens, he insisted Hughes interview for the post of general manager.

Geoff Molson, the owner, announced the appointment of Kent Hughes as general manager of the Canadiens on January 18, 2022.

Molson Believes, Hughes' recruitment will rebuild the team. After the team lost seven consecutive games at the beginning of 2022, Hughes removed Ducharme as the head coach and replaced him with Martin St. Louis.
