NCAA Ice Hockey Champions Since 2000

Since the inaugural championship in 1948, countless players have etched their names into history, battling for the coveted national title.

The dawn of the 21st century ushered in a new era of NCAA ice hockey dominance, with diverse teams etching their names onto the Frozen Four trophy.

From the historic championship run of North Dakota in 2000 to the recent triumph of Quinnipiac in 2023, each year has brought thrilling competition and unexpected heroes.

Quinnipiac Bobcats - 2023

Quinnipiac Bobcats etched their name in history by winning their first-ever NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship in 2023.

Bobcats were against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in a thrilling championship final which went to the extra time until Jacob Quillan scored the winning goal to seal the victory for Quinnipiac.

Denver Pioneers - 2022

Denver Pioneers won the 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship, defeating the Minnesota State Mavericks by 5-1.

It was their ninth national title tying them with Michigan and the fourth in the last six years. 

Led by Carle as their head coach, the team faced up against the Mavericks hosted in Boston. The Denver showed dominance in the game with Michael Benning leading the attack who scored 2 goals and 2 assists in 3 tournament games. 

Eventhough, though the Pioneers were done by 1-0 till the second period, they showered the goals in 3rd period scoring 5 and stealing the trophy from Minnesota.

University of Massachusetts Minuteme - 2021

The University of Massachusetts won the NCAA DI Men's Ice Hockey Champions in 2021 defeating St. Cloud State Huskies by 5-0 in the finals.

The game was on 10th April 2021 at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh where both the teams faced up against each other in the final game of the tournament. 

The game unfolded with the Minutemen showcasing their offensive threat scoring two goals in the first period and three more in the second.

Goaltender Filip Lindberg delivered a stellar performance, setting a new record with his fourth career shutout in the NCAA tournament, 

Bobby Trivigno was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament for his two goals and two assists.

Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs - 2019

Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs carved their names in ice hockey history by claiming their third NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship in 2019.

The final, held at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, NewYork saw the Bulldogs facing off against the Umass Hockey team where the Bulldogs emerged victorious by a 3-0 final score. 

Parker Mackay was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament with two goals and an assist. It was their second consecutive title under Scott Sandelin. 

Following the 2020 tournament, it was canceled due to the pandemic following the Covid-19 restrictions implied by the official NCAA authority. 

Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs- 2018

Led by Sandelin, Minnesota Duluth proudly etched their name in college hockey history clinching their second title and first for Sandelin. 

The championship game, held at the Xcel Energy Center saw the Bulldogs take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a nail-biting battle with the game ending on a score of 2-1, where Minnesota Duluth emerged victorious.

The leading scorer, Perunovich became only the fourth defenseman to lead a championship team in scoring.

Denver Pioneers - 2017

Denver Pioneers cemented their place among college hockey royalty by claiming their eighth national title. 

They won the 2017 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey tournament title defeating the Minnesota Duluth by thrilling 3-2 score. 

In the game held at the United Center in Chicago, the Pioneers faced off against the Minnesota Duluth where they clinched the victory riding on the shoulders of a dominant performance from Jarid Lukosevicius.

Lukosevicius scored a hat trick in the second period of the game to clinch the victory with two coming in space of 16 seconds apart. 

North Dakota Fighting Hawks - 2016

North Dakota Fighting Hawks soared to new heights by claiming the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship, their eighth national title.

In the finals held at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida, the Fighting Hawks face off against the Quinnipiac Bobcats. With a decisive 5-1 victory, they etched their names in the NCAA history books. 

Drake Caggiula was the leading scorer for the Fighting Hawks, scoring two goals in the championship game.

Berry led the Fighting Hawks to a national championship in his first season in charge as the head coach.

Providence Friars- 2015

The Providence Friars etched their names in college hockey history by claiming the program's first-ever national title in 2015.

Held at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, Friars face off against the Boston University Terriers in a thrilling battle.

Providence secured their historic victory by 4-3, ending Boston University's 13-game winning streak in the process.

Jon Gillies made a game-saving block in the final seconds of the final game which helped the Friars to clinch their first title.

Union College Dutchmen ( N.Y) - 2014

The Union College Dutchmen stormed to the top by claiming the 2014 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship, their first-ever national title in franchise history.

Dutchmen face off against the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers in the finals held at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. 

In a game with back and forth, the Dutchmen emerged victorious thrashing Minnesota with a 7-4 score. 

Key players include Shayne Gostisbehere, Mike Vecchione, Eli Lichtenwald, Daniel Ciampini, and Colin Stevens who played a crucial part in the winning run throughout the tournament. 

Yale Bulldogs - 2013

With an overall record of 22-12-3, Yale clinched the 2013 NCAA D1 Championships, defeating the Bobcats in the finals. 

They had their first in the history books following an improbable run for the underdog Bulldogs in the tournament. 

Yale took on the heavily favored Quinnipiac Bobcats, their in-state rivals hosted at Pittsburgh.

With a dominant performance and a shutout by goaltender Jeff Malcolm, the Bulldogs secured a 4-0 victory upsetting the Bobcats. 

Malcolm was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament with his 36 saved shots earning fourth shutout of the season.

Boston College Eagles - 2012

Boston College Eagles soared to glory winning the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.

This thrilling victory marked the program's fifth national title in the history books.

The championship game, held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in Tampa, Florida, saw the Eagles face off against Ferris State University where the Ferris got thrashed 4-1.

Gaudreau's electrifying goal was a highlight of the entire tournament and is considered one of the most iconic goals in NCAA championship history. 

They ended their run with a 33-10-1 overall record throughout the tournament.

Minnesota Duluth - 2011

Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs etched their names in college hockey history by claiming the program's first-ever national title.

The Bulldogs were against the Michigan Wolverines in the finals held at the Xcel Energy Center

With a dramatic overtime goal by Kyle Schmidt, Minnesota Duluth secured a 3-2 victory and had their name in the history books.

Bulldogs' goaltender, Reiter made 29 saves, including a crucial stop on David Wohlberg's breakaway attempt in overtime.

Boston College Eagles- 2010

The Boston College went on to win the 2010 National title defeating the Wisconsin by a 5-0 score in the finals. 

Led by their head coach Jerry York, Boston maintained their overall record of 29-10-3 throughout the season. 

In the finals held at the Ford Field in Detroit, the Eagles led the first period by 1-0 but held goalless in the second period. However, the goals showered in the third period after they scored 4 past the Badgers. 

Cam Atkinson scored 2 in the 3rd period whereas Chris Kreider and Matt Price had one goal each leading Eagles to 2010 title.

Boston University Terriers - 2009

Boston University Terriers etched their names in college hockey history by claiming the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.

Terriers face off against Miami University (Ohio) in a nail-biting battle that went down to the wire.

With a dramatic comeback victory in overtime, Boston University secured a 4-3 victory and captured the championship title which was their fifth in the program's history.

Nick Bonino tied the game with a crucial goal with just one minute remaining in the third period, sending the game into overtime.

Zach Cohen netted the winning goal in overtime leading the team to victory. He also won the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament award. 

Boston College Eagles - 2008

Boston College Eagles soared to new heights in 2008, securing their third national title. 

In the finals played at Pepsi Center in Denver, the Eagles came up with a decisive 4-1 victory cementing their place among college hockey's elite.

The Eagles' dependable goaltender, John Muse made 21 saves in the championship game, allowing only one goal.

Ben Smith's two goals within five minutes gave the Eagles a commanding lead in the second period building an early momentum in the finals.

Michigan State Spartans - 2007

Michigan State Spartans marked their third national title claiming the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship. 

The game was back and forth till the second period until the first goal by Brian Boyle giving Boston the lead which was cancelled out by Tim Kennedy making it  1-1 in the third period. 

Following a draw, the other two goals from Justin Abdelkader and Chris Mueller decided the game which went into the hands of Michigan as they scored 3 in the third period to make 3-1.

Jeff Lerg made 29 saves throughout the game for the Michigan and played a crucial part in finale victory.

Wisconsin Badgers - 2006

The Wisconsin Badgers skated into history by claiming their sixth national title, the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship. 

In the championship game held at the Bradley Center, the Badgers faced off against Boston College in a thrilling showdown where they emerged victorious with a winning goal from Tom Gilbert.

Brian Elliot made 22 crucial saves keeping the team in the game shutting down the Eagle's offensive threats. 

Denver Pioneers - 2005

The Denver Pioneers Denver secured their historic championship title with a decisive 4-1 victory over North Dakota in the 2005 finals. 

It was their first-ever national title in the program's history. Paul Stastny was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. 

Goalie, Mannino made 28 saves in the championship game and allowed only one goal.

Brett Skinner scored two goals following an equalizing goal by Paul Stastny in the second period which led the Pioneers to come back into the game.

Denver Pioneers - 2004

This victory marked the program's sixth national title, solidifying their place among the elite in college hockey.

With a dramatic 1-0 victory, Denver secured their championship legacy against the University of Maine in a nail-biting battle. 

Gabe Gauthier scored the winning goal on the power play in the first period, which was the only goal throughout the game.

Adam Berkhoel was a wall in the net, making 24 saves, including two crucial stops on blistering slap shots by Maine's top scorer, Colin Shields.

Minnesota Golden Gophers - 2003

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers skated to glory by claiming the 2003 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Championship.

The Golden Gophers dominated the 2003 NCAA Tournament, winning all four of their games by a combined score of 16-5.

HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York, saw Minnesota face off against the University of New Hampshire where they emerged victorious securing a 5-1 victory.

Adam Hauser made 25 saves in the championship game, allowing only one goal. Ryan Johnson provided crucial scoring depth with 7 points in 4 games, including a goal and an assist.

Grant Potulny was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament, Potulny led the team in scoring with 14 points in 4 games.

Minnesota Golden Gophers - 2002

Boston College Eagles - 2001

In a nail-biting game at Pepsi Arena, the game unfolded first after Chuck Kobasew scored the first goal of the game giving the lead to Boston, followed by a second goal from Mike Lephart. 

The 2 goal lead was overturned with the equalizers from Tim Skarperud and Wes Dorey from North Dakota taking the game into overtime. 

Krys Kolanos had the final breakthrough scoring a winning goal in the overtime giving the Boston 3-2 lead to win the title.
