Best College Hockey Programs By NCAA Championships

The best college hockey programs are 1. Michigan Wolverines 2. Denver Pioneers 3. North Dakota Fighting Hawks 4. Wisconsin Badgers

Both the Wolverines and Pioneers stand top of the table with 9 NCAA championships each, followed by the Fighting Hawks with 8 triumphs.

These colleges have done a praiseworthy task in the growth of the sport at the collegiate level with several hockey sponsorship programs.

University of Michigan's hockey program is the most successful of the lot, having claimed the very first championship in NCAA history in 1948.

Most recently, Quinnipiac Bobcats took their first national championship home in 2023. The runner-up of 2013 and 2016 appeared in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 2002.

The NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament is a college-level hockey championship held annually to determine the top team in Division I.

University of Michigan - 9 Championships

The Michigan Wolverines men's ice hockey team is one of the best college hockey teams. They have won the NCAA championship nine times.

The Wolverines won the title last time around in 1998. They were runner-up in 2011. The team's current head coach is Brandon Naurato.

A number of athletes from the programs have relished great success in their post-Wolverines career and have been awarded several honors.

The NHL All-Stars Matty Beniers, Red Berenson, Kyle Connor, Max Pacioretty, Quinn Hughes, and Dylan Larkin among many others are former Wolverines. A number of players from the program are playing in the NHL.

A total of 6 players who played for the Wolverines have been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. They are Vic Heyliger, Willard Ikola, John Matchefts, Wally Grant, John MacInnes, and Red Berenson.

In recent years, the team's performance has not been that blazing as compared to its own history. The Wolverines were most successful during the 1950s.

University of Denver - 9 Championships

Denver Pioneers hockey national championships count of 9 is tied with the Wolverines for the most all-time NCAA Division I Hockey ranking.

The Pioneers clinched the national hockey championship title last in 2022, winning the thrilling final match against the Minnesota State Mavericks.

They play their home games at Magness Arena. David Carle has been in the position of the head coach of the University of Denver since 2018.

The former alumni Keith Magnuson, Peter McNab, and Kevin Dineen were selected NHL All-Star players. About 75 Pioneers have made it to play in the National Hockey League.

The famous Pioneers' ice hockey center, Craig Patrick has been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame and United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

Paul Stastny, Tyler Bozak, and Jason Zucker are some of the active NHL players who played for the Denver Pioneers during their college careers.

Dallas Gaume is leading the Pioneers in points with a total of 78 goals and 188 assists. Gaume represented the university team from 1982 - 1986.

University of North Dakota - 8 Championships

The University of North Dakota's ice hockey team stands second in the college hockey rankings. The Fighting Hawks have won 8 NCAA titles.

The Hawks have appeared in the NCAA tournament over 30 times. More impressively, they have made it to the Frozen Four 22 times.

It claimed its last championship title in 2016 with a record of 34-6-4. The team won 5-1 over Quinnipiac University's Bobcats to win the title.

Brad Berry is the current head coach of the program, serving the Hawks since 2015. North Dakota hockey arena is the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The 2023 season was not quite memorable for the Fighting Hawks. The inconsistencies in the early games ruined their season and the team was not selected for the NCAA tournament.

Former University of North Dakota players John Marks, Jason Blake, Dave Christian, Dennis Hextall, and others were selected as NHL All-Stars.

Ed Belfour is the only player from the program to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. A total of 4 athletes, Dave Christian, Mike Curran, Cal Marvin, and Fido Purpur have been inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

University of Wisconsin-Madison - 6 Championships

The Wisconsin Badgers ice hockey team has collected 6 national championships. Their record ranks fourth best in the history of college hockey.

The Badgers claimed their most recent NCAA Tournament Championship in 2006 defeating the Boston College Eagles. Sadly, their form has not been up to mark off late, and stands at 40th place in the 2023 NCAA d1 hockey rankings.

Cole Caufield was awarded the Hobey Baker Award as the top NCAA player in 2021. Caufield was drafted 15th overall by the Montreal Canadiens.

The current head coach of the team is Mike Hastings. He has been recently selected for the position. The team plays its home games at the Kohl Center arena.

Ryan McDonagh is among the most notable Badgers, playing for the Nashville Predators of the NHL. He was also selected as an NHL All-Star.

Other NHL All-Stars from the program include Scott Mellanby, Brian Mullen, Brian Elliott, Mike Richter, Mark Johnson, Curtis Joseph, and so on.

Some of the most famous players in the NHL, who played for the Badgers are Joe Pavelski, Justin Schultz, Craig Smith, Derek Stepan, and others.

Boston College - 5 Championships

Boston College have won 5 NCAA titles since their appearance in the tournament in 1948. The Eagles won their last championship title in 2012.

Boston College's ice hockey program is one of the oldest and top college hockey programs in the country. They first appeared in the NCAA tournament in 1948 and became champions the following year.

The Boston College Eagles have been runner-up in the NCAA tournament for six times. The Eagles also made it 25 times to the Frozen Four.

Former NHL defenseman Greg Brown is the current head coach of the Eagles, who also played for the program during his days in the college.

Cam Atkinson, Brian Boyle, Patrick Eaves, Cory Schneider, and Noah Hanifin are the former Eagles to be selected for NHL All-Star. Likewise, Brian Leetch, Joe Mullen, and Jerry York have been inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Several athletes from the program including Craig Janney and Brian Leetch are inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

Boston University - 5 Championships

The Boston University hockey championship count of 5 is also pretty impressive. The Terriers have reached the Frozen Four on 22 occasions.

BU's hockey program saw its last title in 2009 winning 4-3 in overtime in NCAA final. While the Terriers advanced to the Frozen Four last in 2015.

The BU ice hockey team plays their home games at Agganis Arena. They are being coached under Jay Pandolfo, head coach of the program.

Furthermore, the Terriers are the only eastern team to win back-to-back NCAA championship titles, winning it consecutively in 1971 and 1972.

A total of 22 Terriers have been selected in the first round of the NHL Entry Draft, including Scott Lachance, Jack Eichel, Brady Tkachuk, and more. Rick DiPietro was chosen first overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft.

The players who made their name as the NHL All-Stars from BU Terriers include Adrian Aucoin, Charlie McAvoy, Kevin Shattenkirk, and more. 

Furthermore, former athletes Chris Drury, Matt Gilroy, and Jack Eichel have been honored with the Hobey Baker Award as the top NCAA players.

University of Minnesota - 5 Championships

The University of Minnesota has claimed 5 NCAA Tournament Championships. The Golden Gophers won back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

In 2002, Minnesota won 4-3 over the Black Bears in OT. To win the title in the next year, the Golden Gophers defeated New Hampshire by 5-1.

The Gophers became runner-up in the NCAA 2022-23 season, losing the title to the Quinnipiac Bobcats. The University of Minnesota is in first place in Big Ten hockey standings, becoming the champions of 2023.

Bob Motzko is currently serving as head coach of the hockey team. The Golden Gophers play their home games at Mariucci Arena, Minnesota.

Thomas Vanek and Blake Wheeler are the players to be selected as both NHL All-Star and NHL All-Star teams from Minnesota's hockey program.

The NHL All-Stars including Neal Broten, Kyle Okposo, Erik Johnson, and others represented the Golden Gophers during their collegiate career.
