Rules to get your name on the Stanley Cup depict criteria like one needs to belong to the winning team. You can either be the roster, owner, mentor, or front office staff.

It means, first and foremost, the NHL franchise needs to win the annual National Hockey League playoff championship. Then the league allows the champion to submit a list of monikers they want to engrave on the Cup.

In the case of the player, he needs to play half the regular season or at least one game in the Silver Cup Finals to get his name automatically on the Cup.

The Montreal Wanderers began stamping the titles of the Stanley Cup winner in 1906-1907. It became an annual tradition in 1924.

The team's title and winning year come first, followed by the owner, president, head coach, general managers, and others. The captain leading the club to victory is denoted as 'Capt.

Stanley Cup Name Rules

Stanley Cup name rules relate to the name limits, game played counts, and many more.

Moreover, only the official Cup engraver has the authority to add names to the Cup.

Some of the Laws related to title engraving in the Silver Cup are:

  • The NHL franchise must win the Stanley Cup Championship to get its name stamped in the trophy.
  • Title engraving begins after the summer and before the next season starts. The whole process takes up to 10 working days. Each name takes around 10 to 30 minutes to stamp.
  • Only the official Stanley Cup engraver can get the job done. The Silversmith uses a stencil and a hammer to manually place each designation.
  • Once the moniker is stamped, it can't be changed even if there is a mistake. For instance, Toronto Maple Leafs was misspelled as Toronto Maple Leaes after the 1962-1963 victory.
  • Each team can submit a maximum of 52 names for the engraving. That has to be approved by the league.
  • In the case of the athlete, he needs to be officially listed on the roster during the playoffs to get his name added.  Moreover, the athlete has to play half of the regular season game or a minimum of one game in the Finals.
  • Once the Trophy is full of monikers, the top ring is removed, and a blank one is added from the below. It happens once in thirteen years. The removed circlet is retired and placed at the Hall of Fame, Toronto.

How Many Names Go On The Stanley Cup?

A maximum of 52 names go on the Stanley Cup each year. The winning team can choose the number that shouldn't exclude the limit.

The regulation of having a maximum limit of fifty-two members per year was introduced in the 1997-1998 season.

In the season, Detroit Red Wings gave the list of 55 members. They even mentioned the name of a player who missed the regular season due to a serious injury.

Even though the league allowed to add all those members, they felt it was excessive. So they brought new law of only keeping fifty-two members.

One of the minimum titles engraved in the history of the National Hockey League was in the 1926-1927 season. Ottawa Senators were the winner, who only submitted 17 names.

Similarly, New York Tanger added nineteen titles the subsequent year and in the 1939-1940 season. They missed mentioning one player who played in the finals and the vice president in the latter season.

Last year, the Avalanche followed the limitations, while a few were left off. This year champions are soon to get their titles engraved in the Trophy.

What Happens When The Stanley Cup Gets Full Of Names?

When the Stanley Cup gets full of names a new blank band is added to the bottom. The top band is removed from the trophy.

The current bowl-shaped trophy consisted of a bowl, three-tiered bands, a collar, and a five-band barrel. Each barrel band could contain 13 winning clubs per band.

That means each band gets fully occupied once in 13 years. When the band has no more place for additional engraving, the top circle is detached. The remaining four are slid up, and a new one is added at the bottom.

The extracted ring is retired and displayed in the Hockey Hall of Fame cellar, which is located in Toronto.

What Names Go On The Stanley Cup?

The National Hockey League playoff champion members' names go on the Stanley Cup. It includes the players, coach, owners, and some team personnel.

Here the team personnel means the key team executives such as the general manager and presidents. Assistant coaches and other coaching staff who were part of the championship-winning team can have their monikers added.

The winning team gets to make the list of the moniker, yet that has to be approved by the league. To be on the Cup, the person must be the team's active member.

An exceptional case occurred in 1988 when the Red Wings included a player who didn't perform that year following an injury due to a car accident the previous year.

Silversmith uses a stencil and a hammer to place each moniker onto the trophy. Montreal silversmith Louise St. Jacques has been the official Cup engraver since 1988. She is the fourth official engraver of the league.

Is Stanley Cup Names Removed?

Stanley Cup names are not removed, but the top band filled with the titles is removed once in 13 years.

The removed band is retired and joins the vault of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

The five-band trophy can hold the titles for 13 years each. Fifty-two monikers, franchise title, and its winning year get stamped each year.

The most recent removal of the top band was on October 1, 2018. It carried 340 monikers featuring the champions from 1953-1954 to 1964-1965. The remaining four circles slid up one place to make room for the new one.

2017-2018 champions, Washington Capital, started fresh on the bottom band. It will be space-less after the 2029-2030 season. And the process of removing and adding will continue again.

Who Is The Stanley Cup Names After?

Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston. Frederick Arthur Stanley served as the Governor General of Canada for five years.

Frederick paid around $50 in 1892 to own the bowl-shaped trophy. He wanted it to stay as a reminder of his time as Canada's governor general.

At the time, it was authorized as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. He donated the oldest existing trophy as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey team.

Montreal Hockey Club, the senior-level men's amateur ice hockey team of Montreal, won the first-ever Cup in 1893. Later in 1926, it was established as the championship award of the National Hockey Team.

The original Cup was 7.28 inches high and 11.42 inches wide and made of pure silver. The current Silver Cup is made of silver and nickel alloy, topped with a copy of the original.

Frederick was the second son of the prime minister and 14th Earl of Derby, Edqrd Smith-Stanley. His entire family was keen on ice hockey, especially after he became the Governor General on June 11, 1888.

In fact, his sons, Arthur and Algernon, established one of the initial Canadian ice hockey teams and named it the Ottawa Rideau Hall Rebels. His daughters also played and promoted ice hockey.
