Stanley Cup Name Rules
Stanley Cup name rules relate to the name limits, game played counts, and many more.
Moreover, only the official Cup engraver has the authority to add names to the Cup.
Some of the Laws related to title engraving in the Silver Cup are:
- The NHL franchise must win the Stanley Cup Championship to get its name stamped in the trophy.
- Title engraving begins after the summer and before the next season starts. The whole process takes up to 10 working days. Each name takes around 10 to 30 minutes to stamp.
- Only the official Stanley Cup engraver can get the job done. The Silversmith uses a stencil and a hammer to manually place each designation.
- Once the moniker is stamped, it can't be changed even if there is a mistake. For instance, Toronto Maple Leafs was misspelled as Toronto Maple Leaes after the 1962-1963 victory.
- Each team can submit a maximum of 52 names for the engraving. That has to be approved by the league.
- In the case of the athlete, he needs to be officially listed on the roster during the playoffs to get his name added. Moreover, the athlete has to play half of the regular season game or a minimum of one game in the Finals.
- Once the Trophy is full of monikers, the top ring is removed, and a blank one is added from the below. It happens once in thirteen years. The removed circlet is retired and placed at the Hall of Fame, Toronto.
