Philadelphia Flyers Head Coach
John Tortorella is the current head coach of Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran coach was appointed by the Flyers management on June 17, 2022.
Prior to his service with the Flyers, Tortorella worked as the coaching head for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Vancouver Canucks, NY Rangers, and Tampa Bay Lightning.
Most recently, he coached the Blue Jackets for 6 seasons. His coaching career began with the Rochester Americans of the AHL and the Virginia Lancers of ECHL.
The Tampa Bay Lightning became the Stanley Cup Champion for the first time in 2004 under his tutelage. Tortorella holds the record of the first American coach in the NHL to reach the milestone of 500 wins.
He has been awarded the Jack Adams Award twice as the NHL’s top coach. He has been named as a finalist for the award during four seasons.
"I am very excited to be joining such a historic and well-respected franchise like the Philadelphia Flyers," said Tortorella after the team selected him as the new coach.
John became the 23rd head coach in the team's history. Having completed 20 seasons as a head coach in the NHL, he stands second all-time among American coaches with 673 wins.
The NHL 2021-22 season was a bit different for Tortorella. The coach spent the season joining as an analyst for the ESPN broadcasting team.
Tortorella was assigned as the head coach of the USA Hockey Team at the 2008 IIHF World Championships and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Furthermore, John also served the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, which won a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
