New York Rangers Stanley Cup finals appearances are 11 times. They appeared in 1928, 1929, 1932, 1933, 1937, 1940, 1950, 1972, 1979, 1994, and 2014.

The NHL franchise has won the championship trophy four times. They made it to the finals in the 1971–72 and 1978–79 seasons but lost both times.

They had progressive years; by the 1940s they had already reached the finals four times, including two wins. They were a franchise-record seven-year postseason drought during the 1997-98 season.

The Blueshirts lost the 2013 season in six-game Eastern Conference finals series with longtime rival Montreal Canadien. They lost to the New Jersey Devils in the First Round in seven games in the 2022-23 season.

Rangers had a tough time after World War II as the 1950 Stanley appearance they only made the playoffs six times in 17 seasons. In 1972 they reached the finale after 22 years but still could not win.

The team plays in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference and is the only team with no mascot. Its history dates back to 1926 when the founder Tex Richard established it as the New York Press.

The Last Time The New York Rangers Won The Stanley Cup

Last time Rangers won the Stanley Cup was in 1994. The New York Rangers won against the Vancouver Canucks in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals.

The team garnered the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's best regular season team, earning 112 points. They were also named Atlantic Division champions and Eastern Conference regular season champions.

They won against the New York Islanders in the conference quarterfinals and outscored them in the four games 22-3.

The Blueshirts had previously beaten the Islanders in the playoffs before 1994 and had also experienced a period of being eliminated by the Islanders in multiple playoff series.

They got a victory over the Washington Capitals for the conference semifinals with a 4-1 win.

In the conference finals, the team faced the New Jersey Devils with a 4-0 win in Game 7 of the best-of-7. The team finally reached the Stanley Cup finals and defeated Vancouver Canucks.

NY Rangers Stanley Cup Wins By Year

NY Rangers Stanley Cup winners are Mark Messier, Bill Cook and Art Coulter. Bill as captain won the trophy twice in 1928 and 1933.

The Blueshirts had several standout players that helped them succeed in their early years. Some of them are Bill Cook, Frank Boucher, and Bun Cook. They have a high standard for sportsmanship on the ice.


They first won the cup in 1928; a best-of-five series played against the Montreal Maroons. They won their first cup within two years of existence in NHL history.

The NHL franchise became the first U.S based hockey team in the NHL to win the Stanley Cup.

During Stanley Cup finals Game 2, athlete Patrick Roy substituted himself for injured goaltender Lorne Chabot and held his own in the net for the win. Lorne suffered an eye injury.

The team defeated the Boston Bruins in the conference finals with a 5–2 score.


Their second win came within a few years after they got a victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in a rematch of the 1932 Finals.

The blueshirts were all prepared with a group of stars in the late 1930s. They had Davey Kerr and Art Coulter from the Maroons and Chicago respectively.

They have also been named the classiest team in hockey after making a history of four appearances in finals in their first six years of history.

Before reaching the Finals, New York swept away Montreal Canadiens(8-5) and Detroit Red Wings (6–3). They vacated  Madison Square Garden for the circus.

They posted a 23-17-6 record in the regular season. Bill Cook became the first Hockey player to score a Cup-winning goal in overtime, while goaltender Andy Aitkenhead picked up 23 wins in 48 games.

In 1940, the team won against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 4-1 win. The teams' 14th season with then-new coach Frank Boucher was impressive with a 27–11–10 record.

The final match between the two NHL franchises was interesting to watch. It had three overtime; the first two games were held at home, whereas the next two were in Toronto.

Bryan Hextall scored in overtime in the final game. Lynn and Murray Patrick became the third and fourth members of the Patrick family to win the trophy.

After this year, they took 54 years to bring home another cup. The superstitious curse is called the Curse of 1940 and Dutton's Curse. Some theories explain the coach and general manager Red Dutton was the reason behind it.

Dutton once said that the Rangers would never win the Cup for as long as he lived. He passed away in 1987.

They made it to the finals in the 1971–72 and 1978-79 seasons but could not win the cup. They lost six games to the Bruins in 1972 and five games to the Canadiens in 1979.


The Rangers got to hold the Stanley Cup after 54 years on 14 July 1994. They won over Vancouver Canucks with a 2-1 win in Game 7.

They won against the Islanders in the first round of the playoffs, winning over the Washington Capitals in five games in the second round. They swept aside the Devils in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The playoffs were magical with the star players all-star center Mark Messier, left wing Adam Graves, goaltender Mike Richter and defenseman Brian Leetch.

Brian Leetch scored at 11:02 of the first period while Adam Graves made a two-goal lead with a power play goal.

In the second period, they fell behind 2–0 but trailed 2-1 in the third period. Messier scored a natural hat trick taking the game to 7. Their fans chanted 1940 as the curse ended.

They have not won any cup since then.

NY Rangers Stanley Cup Playoffs

NY Rangers Stanley Cup playoffs appearance is 61 in 96 seasons. They play in the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference.

After only two years of entering the NHL, the Rangers reached the Stanely playoff in 1928. They defeated Pittsburgh Penguins in the quarterfinals with a total goal series 6 - 4.

In the semifinals, they defeated their rival the Boston Bruins. The team finally had a game with Montreal Maroons who defeated Montreal Canadiens in the semifinals.

In the year, the Blueshirts lost the trophy to the Boston Bruins, which they defeated in last season's semifinal.

The team defeated the New York Americans in the quarterfinals (2 - 1). Butch Keeling made 1 goal in two games while others could make one.

The NY team entered the semifinals to fight against the Toronto Maple Leafs and won with a 2 - 0 score. They could make a second consecutive win for the finals but failed with a 2 - 0.


The NY Blueshirts lost the final match with Maple Leaf by a 6 - 4 defeat. The cup was presented to Captain Hap Day by NHL President Frank Calder.

The cup was engraved by Conn Smythe's son Stafford Smythe at age 11. It had names including Andy Blair, Irvine Ace Bailey, Alex Levinsky, and many more.


The team lost the final match to the defending champion Detroit Red Wings with a 3 - 2 score. They defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Maroons before reaching the finals.


The NHL franchise faced the Detroit Red Wings in the finals and lost to them. They got victory over the Montreal Maroons and the three-time defending champion Toronto Maple Leafs to reach the round.


They made it to the finals in 1972 where they had a match against the Boston Bruins. The Bruins win over them with a 5 - 6 score.

The Blueshirts defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues in the quarterfinals and semifinals.


The team appeared in the cup finale in 1979 against the Montreal Canadiens who was making four straight appearances. They lost to the Canadiens four games to one.


The Western Conference champion Los Angeles Kings won against the Blueshirts with a 4 -1 victory. The team defeated Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal to reach the finale.

NY Rangers Bracket

New York Rangers 2023 bracket had seven games in the first round. The New Jersey Devils eliminated the team with a 4-3 win in Game 7.

They had acquired Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko for the season. The team has had Jacob Trouba as team captain since August 2022.
