When does training camp start for NHL? Training camps for the NHL (National Hockey League) start in mid-to-late September.

The start date of the camps varies each season. It is conducted two or three weeks prior to the initiation of the regular season. Moreover, it includes a preseason comprising around eight exhibition games.

Not to forget, each National Hockey League team conducts its own training camp at a designated facility, mostly near their home city.

Roster, returning athletes, rookies, prospects, and players on professional tryout contracts can participate in the event. The club's coaching staff and team management assess the participants' performance.

The main motive of such events is to prepare the franchise for the regular season. They allow the teams to evaluate the athletes and improve their skills and physical fitness.

 

When Does NHL Training Camp Start 2023-24?

NHL training camp start date 2024 is scheduled for September 21 to September 24. The regular season is planned to be held from October 2023.

If all goes well, prospects like Connor Bedard, Adam Fantilli, Willian Smith, and Leo Carlsson will participate in the camp with one of the NHL teams. David Reinbacher, Dalibor Dvorsky, and Ryan Leonard are also on the list.

In the history of the NHL franchise, The Philadelphia Flyers were the first to provide off-ice workout facilities for the team in mid-1970. A workout room was created at the Class o 1923 Rink at the University of Pennsylvania.

As time passed by, other teams also started organizing those events. They used to travel far to their designated locations. Later, the clubs began choosing the nearest practice center to minimize training expenses. 

NHL Training Camp 2021-22  

NHL Training Camp 2021-2022 welcomed the 32nd team, the Seattle Kraken, to the training program.

This season, players and coaches were more than excited to see the team and admirers return to a normal year. The earlier two seasons were shortened and tweaked due to the 2019 pandemic.

Players missed traveling and playing out of the division. One of them was Coyotes forward Jakob Chychrun. Jakob expressed excitement about going to different cities and playing in different rinks.

Likewise, the Devils felt back to life after organizing the 2021- 2022 season's camp.

Following that, for the first time, Kraken played in the regulars games of the league.

NHL Training Camp 2022-23

For the 2022-2023 season, the NHL training camp started during September-third week. However, not all 32 teams began on the same day.

For instance, the Stanley Cup Champions 2023 went for the camp on September 22, while the Canucks started the following date.

The regular season games started around two weeks later, on October 7.  Each team had an arena closer to their home rink.

What Is NHL Training Camp?

NHL training camp is the period when professional ice hockey clubs gather to prepare and enhance themselves for the next season. It starts before the start of the regular season.

The camp is crucial for both the players and the management team. The athletes get to improve their skills, whereas the management team evaluates players' performance. Moreover, the participants get an opportunity to establish team unity and chemistry.

Not just the rosters but returning players, prospective athletes, and team coaches can also join the camp. It can be an effective platform for the prospect to showcase his skills, and supplement them.

Likewise, the mentors can decide the roster for the next season based on the participant's accomplishments.

The franchises don't need to start the camp at the same tie. They are at liberty to pick a date. Traditionally, the team proceeds to the training period during September.

For instance, the Knights won the Stanley Cup recently, and the regular season game for the year has ended. Now, the NHL Entry Draft is on the way. It will start on June 28 and June 29.

Once the draft ends, the team will persist in preparing for the training. All the rookies and drafted athletes can also join the event.

How Long Is NHL Training Camp?

NHL training camp lasts around two to three weeks. The camp duration is different from season to season and team to team.

In simple words, the length of the camp is determined by factors like the team's schedule, preseason games, and the coaching associate's preference.

Similarly, external factors like international events such as the Olympic games may also affect the scheme of the training and regular season start date.

The athletes undergo fitness examinations, physicals, and skills evaluations during those roughly three weeks. Also, the team engages in a series of practices, preseason games, and battles to assemble for the upcoming season.

NHL Training Camp Rules

National Hockey League have specific rule and guidelines regarding the training camps. Yet, they are erratic over time.

Also, teams can add regulations for their participants if they want. Some of the specific rules are listed below:

  • Teams announce their specific training schedules. It begins a few weeks before the regular season starts. Also, the exact date can vary from other franchises.
  • Attending whole training days is mandatory. Those who are absent without permission need to pay
  • The total number of player invited to the camp range from around 40 to 60 or more if needed. The invitee includes a mix of returning athletes, rookies, prospects, and PTOs.
  • It is obligatory to undergo physical examinations and medical evaluations before participating in on-ice activities.
  • Mentors and trainers design workout programs to improve players' hockey-specific skills.
  • Regular intrasquad battles are organized for athletes to compete against each other. The motive behind this action is also to make roster decisions. Likewise, preseasons game with other teams let the players prove their abilities.
  • Team building and social events are regular to create a positive team environment.
  • The participants and team officials are allowed to interact with the media during the training period.

NHL Training Camp Rosters By Team

NHL training camp rosters by team consist of around six goalies, 23 defensemen, and 38 forwards each.

The Vancouver Canucks announced their camp would take place on September 21–25. They will function for five days of training at Save-On-Foods Memorial Center Victoria. It is the home of the Victoria Royals.

Similarly, the Coyotes announced the rookie and veteran training camps for 2022-2023 to begin on September 14. They will practice on ice  at Ice Den Scottsdale.

The Calgary Flames also had 68 roster spots for training camp, including 38 forwards, 23 defensemen, and goaltenders. Some of them were Jacob Markstrom, Simon Lavonne, Juuso Valimaki, Calder Brooks, and Alex Gallant.

NHL Training Camp News

NHL training camp news for 2023 is yet to come. Hockey fans are eagerly waiting for the buzz once the camp starts.

This year, the training program will be inaugurated in September. National Hockey League lovers will devour enormous buzz related to the events shortly.

For now, let's get back to some of the happening scoops of the previous season. Carter Hart and Cam Atkinson were day-to-day for the Flyers in 2022.

The "Day-to-day" list depicts slightly injured athletes to whom the medical staff is unable to decide when they can continue playing.

Likewise, Tyler Bertuzzi and Jeff Carter were on the list for the Wings and the Penguins, respectively.

Washington Capitals were expected to acquire Alex Ovechkin for the first time in the preseason. The team played at the Wings and Ovechkin was one of the 13 forwards.

Connor Murphy missed practice with the Blackhawks due to nack soreness. He failed to play in a pre-season game against the Wings. Likewise, Nick Suzuki was out for two weeks from the Canadiens because of a lower-body injury.

Toronto Maple Leafs began their camp without Jake Muzzin. Muzzin was unavailable due to back discomfort.

Jake McCabe participated in the first day of the Blackhawks event. He underwent cervical spine surgery six weeks earlier the camp started.
