The trophy was gifted to the NHL by the Montreal Canadiens in January 1999. It honors and is named after Maurice Richard, who was a former iconic player of the team.

A Finnish Ice Hockey Winger, Teemu Selanne, from Mighty Ducks of Anaheim won the first Rocket Richard Trophy in 1999. Connor McDavid holds the trophy as of the 2022-23 season.

The "Rocket": The Maurice Richard Story

Joseph Henri Maurice "Rocket" Richard (born 1921) was a professional Canadian hockey player. The iconic athlete played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for his team Montreal Canadiens.

Richard was the first player to score 50 goals in 50 games in a season and the first to make 500 career goals.

Richard started playing hockey with his school and neighborhood squads in his early days. While studying at Montreal Technical School to become a machinist, he played for several teams including with an amateur club, where he scored 133 of the team’s total 144 goals.

Maurice signed with the Montreal Senior Canadiens in 1940.

NHL Career

Richard was 5 times top goal scorer in his 18-season NHL career and also the all-time top goal scorer at the time of his retirement.

The rightwinger scored 82 playoff goals, including 6 overtime goals. The 'Rocket' made seven playoff hat tricks scoring 18 game-winning playoff goals.

Being a member of eight Stanley Cup champion teams, he was the one who made all 5 goals against Toronto in 1944 and was named as all three of the game’s stars.

Richard ended up his career in 1960 as he was suffering from several injuries including a severed Achilles Tendon.

Fights, Riots, and More

Richard was often a short-tempered personality. He always answered any challenges or attacks. A very serious fight broke out between Richard and Hal Laycoe (a Boston Bruin player) in March 1995. Maurice followed Laycoe with his stick and hit a linesman, Cliff Thompson who intervened with him.

Richard grabbed a stick from the ice and swung to Laycoe wildly. It did cut Laycoe's below-the-eye part. It was one of the worst events that ever happened between the players.

For that incident, Richard was suspended by NHL for the rest of the year including the final 3 games of the ongoing season and all the playoffs. This made the Canadiens fans outraged as Richard was very close to winning his first points-scored title.

The offended fans attacked Campbell in a game at the Montreal Forum on St. Patrick’s Day. It led to several acts of violence. The event was known as the "Richard Riot" later.

The famous player died of cancer at the age of 78 in 2000.
