How Many Games In The Stanley Cup Finals?

There are 1,312 games in a regular NHL season. It comprises 26 division games, 24 conference games, and 32 inter-conference games from 32 NHL teams.

The league has four divisions: Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions (Eastern Conference) and Central and Pacific divisions (Western Conference).

The regular season games run from early October to April. The NHL franchises give their best to stand on seasonal ratings. The seasonal standings define which teams are going to the Stanley Cup.

Each team's schedule is set up so they play 2 to 5 games at home and 2 to 5 on the road. Each team will play an average of 7-8 home and away games monthly throughout the season.

Two points are awarded for wins, one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and no points for a loss in regulation time.

The new 2023-24 NHL season starts on October 2023 and ends on June 2024. The preseason games will be held in Australia.

The NHL playoffs 2023 works with 4 rounds of games that are played in a best-of-seven series. Every round has seven games each having three periods of 20 minutes.

• The top 3 teams from each division are selected from the 32 NHL teams with 2 wild cards from each conference.
• The team with the top seed in the regular season gets the home-ice advantage in the first two rounds of the playoffs, regardless of the regular-season point total.
• The club with the greater regular-season point total enjoys the home-ice advantage in the third and fourth rounds, regardless of seeding.
• Any tie in the standings is seeded based on their regulation and overtime wins excluding shoutouts. They can also be decided by the difference between goals and goals against in the regular season.
• In the conference and Stanley finals, teams with the most points in the regular season get the home-ice advantage.
• The club with home-ice advantage hosts games 1, 2, 5, and 7, while their opponent club gets to host games 3, 4, and 6. Games after 4 are only played if needed.
• If a playoff game goes to overtime, an endless number of sudden-death, five-on-five, 20-minute periods are played.

Matchups

The division winner of each conference matches up with the top Wild Card team in the first round.

• Series 1: Division A Winner Vs. Wild Card
• Series 2: Second division winner Vs. third division winner

The NHL playoffs are divided into four rounds:

First Round

In the first round 16 teams their rival team within their conference. The top-seeded club competes with another team to advance to the next round.

In this round, the division winner with the most points in each conference competes with the wild card team.

There are 8 teams from the Eastern Conference and 8 from the Western Conference. They are selected based on regular season standings.

Second Round

The first-round winners are re-seeded based on points; the top seed faces the lowest seed.

Eights teams from the first round face each other within their conference. Only four teams can make it to the next round.

All the teams fight vigorously to reach the conference finals.

Conference Finals

In the conference finals, teams from each conference fight to reach other championship finals. It is the third round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The winning teams in this round receive the Prince of Wales Trophy and Clarence S. Campbell Bowl.

Stanley Cup Finals

The Eastern and Western Conference finals winner makes the final match to bring home the trophy. There is no re-seeding in the finals.

The team winning this round takes home the Lord Stanley Cup home for a year.
