How many Canadian players on Colorado Avalanche? There are 12 Canadian players on Colorado Avalanche of the NHL in the 2022-23 season.

The NHL franchise was established in 1972 and is based in Denver, Colorado. The team plays in the Central Division of the Western Conference.

At its inception, it was named Quebec Nordiques and was based in Quebec City. In 1995, the team was purchased by COMSAT Entertainment Group and relocated to Denver.

In 1979, Avalanche became a franchise of the NHL. In the 1979-80 season, the franchise comprised 2 American and 23 Canadian players. When the club relocated to the US, only 21 out of 36 athletes in the first season were Canadian.

Over the decades, Canadian-born players in the franchise have declined. In the current season, only 42.8% of the roster has Canadian players.

Colorado Avalanche Goalie 

Colorado Avalanche goalies are Pavel Francouz, Alexander Georgiev, and Keith Kinkaid. They made 16, 62, and 2 game appearances respectively.

Pavel debuted in NHL in 2018 representing Colorado Avalanche. He played sixteen games this season and had a save percentage of .915. Francouz formerly performed an action in the Kontinental Hockey League.

Russian player Alexander was not drafted by the NHL. Yet, he was called for the developmental camp by NY Rangers. He earned a .919 save percentage in the current season.

Keith Kinkaid is also undrafted but he was affiliated with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League. He was traded to Avalanche on 25 February 2023. In this season, his save percentage was .950 made during 2 official games.

Emergency Goalie 

Jett Alexander served as the emergency goalie of the Colorado Avalanche. The game was against Toronto Maple Leafs on 2 December 2021.

Alexander held the position of the EBUG in the first period till Jonas Johansson reached the arena. He is an amateur athlete who plays for the hockey team at the University of Toronto. 

Toronto Maple Leafs contracted Jett in an Amateur Tryout Contract(ATO) on 8 April 2023. He came as the substitute for goaltender Ilya Samsonov since another netminder Matt Murray suffered a head injury.  

Colorado Avalanche Defenseman

Colorado Avalanche defenseman include Erik Johnson, Samuel Girard, Kurtis MacDermid, and five others for the 2022-23 season.

Erik was picked by St. Louis Blues as the No. 1 pick in the 2006 NHL Draft. He is the first American-born to be directly picked for National Team Development Program organized by USA Hockey.

Samuel was the 17th pick in the 2016 NHL draft. He played 76 games this season earning 6 goals, 31 assists, and 37 points. Girard has appeared in 416 games throughout his NHL career.

Kurtis is an undrafted defense player who debuted in the National Hockey League with Los Angeles Kings. On 5 April 2022, he signed a two-year deal with the franchise.

Colorado Avalanche Captain and Alternates

Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog missed the 2022-23 season. The alternate captains are Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon.

Gabriel led the team to win the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs. After that, he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery and was said to be on leave for 12 days.

However, Landeskog skipped the entire season to heal from it. Recently, it was reported that he would require a cartilage transplant surgery making it impossible for him to return in the upcoming season.

Gabriel Landeskog

Gabriel Landeskog was booked by the National Hockey League in 2011. He served as the left winger and the fourth captain of the team.

Landeskog became the youngest captain in the history of the NHL. He was only 19 years and 286 days old when he was handed the leadership.

With his exceptional hockey skills, Gabriel reached the roster of the team in the 2011-12 season. His first NHL goal was recorded on 12 October 2011 against Columbus Blue Jackets.

Until now, Landeskog has been featured in 656 regular seasons and 62 playoff games. In 2021, he signed an 8-year extension contract with Avalanche worth $56 million.

Alternates

Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen serve as the alternate captains of the Colorado Avalanche since 2016 and 2021 respectively.

Canadian sportsman Nathan was selected in the 2013 NHL Draft. He was one of the players on the team when they secured the title of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

MacKinnon made his debut in NHL in the 2013-14 season. He has played 10 seasons with the franchise and is contracted for seven more years.

Colorado booked Finnish athlete Mikko at the 2015 NHL draft. He was formerly linked with Turun Palloseura. In his debut season, he represented Avalanche in 9 games.

Following that, Rantanen represented San Antonio Rampage for two seasons. He became 3rd Finnish player to break the 50-goal mark in a regular season of the National Hockey League. 

Colorado Avalanche Coach And General Manager

Colorado Avalanche coach is Jared Bednar since 2016. Chris MacFarland was named general manager of the Avalanche in 2015.

Jared and Chris formerly worked together at the Columbus Blue Jackets. After Chris was hired by Avalanche, he recommended Jared to the team.

Jared Bednar is a former ice hockey right defenseman. He played in some popular leagues like WHL, ECHL, AHL, and IHL but never in the NHL.

Bednar retired after a playing career of 9 years. Following his retirement in 2002, he became an assistant coach of the South Carolina Stingrays. He was named the head coach of the team in the 2007-08 season.

In 2009, Jared stepped down from his position to join Abbotsford Heat. He also served Peoria Rivermen and Jackets respectively.NHL team Colorado hired him on 25 August 2016 as a replacement for Patrick Roy.

Bednar has trained the players and guided them to secure several wins. In the history of the Avalanche, he is the second-winningest coach after Michel Bergeron.

Chris MacFarland

Chris MacFarland is a retired collegiate ice hockey athlete at Pace University. He started as an executive intern at the NHL in 1993.

MacFarland joined the Jackets as a part of the 1999-2000 campaign. From 2001 to 2007, he served as the manager of hockey operations and then as a general manager.

Chris remained with the organization for 16 years before accepting the offer from Avalanche in 2015. He became an assistant manager for then-GM Joe Sakic.

MacFarland was promoted to the role of GM in 2022 and Joe became the President of hockey operations.
