How many assistant captains on a hockey team? A hockey team should have at least two assistant captains.

Alternate captains are assigned to lead the team when the serving leader fails to join a game. Or, in case he is wounded. An NHL team without a leader is permitted to have a minimum of three alternates.

While the representative can have a "C" on their jersey, an "A" on the uniform denotes alternative leaders. The latter gets to practice leadership in the absence of the serving captain.

In the NHL, 30 out of 32 franchises have at least two alternates,   while the Blue Jackets have only one, and the Red Wings have null. Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins, the longest-tenured, has been in the role since 2008.

Although most of the teams have two alternates, a few like the Rangers, the Kraken, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Vancouver Canucks have assigned four players. This team needs to rotate the "A"s by their method of choice.
