A 5 on 3 in hockey is a situation when one team has all players on the roster. But two players from the opponent side are unavailable due to penalties.

In simple words, two players of a team have been penalized for a certain period for violating the rules. And the other team has full strength on the ice.

The ice skater can receive the sanction anytime if he violates the rule. A minor penalty keeps him in the sin box for two minutes, while the major expands the punishment time to five minutes.

Causes like butt-ending hockey, slashing, boarding, hockey fighting, and icing can result in a penalty. Eventually, the team serving a penalty plays a man down for the time limit.

The opponent team, or the team with all five players excluding the goalie, now has the advantage in numbers, known as a "powerplay."

The lineman holds the authority to create the situation by punishing the players who break the rule intentionally or unintentionally.

A 2 5 and 10 in hockey is the sanction minutes any player gets as a penalty. The minutes represent the minor, major, and misconduct penalties, respectively.

That means a player is pulled out of the ice rink for a specific time and must sit in the penalty box for that time.

The penalties differ based on the rules the players violated. Also, there are differences in the penalty rules, which we will learn in detail below:

Minor Penalty - 2 Minutes

A minor penalty is for infringements of the rules like tripping, hooking, holding, elbowing, and high sticking.
However, the penalized athlete can get back to the game if the opponent scores a goal during that time.

Major Penalty - 5 Minutes

A major penalty signifies the player's removal from the game due to a severe violation of player rules. One needs to serve in the sin box for five minutes.

In this case, the opposing team has the advantage of having more players on the ice. Common reasons like fighting, goaltender interference, spearing, and boarding cause the penalty.

Misconduct Penalty - 10 Minutes

A misconduct penalty is when an athlete performs an illegal action on the ice rink. It causes the offending player to leave the rink immediately and sit in the sin box for ten minutes.

The misconduct penalty is more serious than the minor and major ones. And in the worst-case scenario, that player can be suspended from the team's next game. However, this kind of penalty lets the team balance the court by replacing the penalized player.

For instance, game wrongdoing like leaving the bench to fight or verbal abuse to the officials—these kinds of foul actions put the offender out of the court for the next ten minutes.

A 16 in hockey is the jersey number of the best player on the team. It refers to the elite tier.

They are the best of the best. The number of players wear in the stadium can be a big part of their hockey identity. It helps the players connect with their fans.

Likewise, some numbers can even have sentimental value. In the NHL, the players are given numbers between 1 and 98. More often, they are assigned a number by the team, while they can make a choice very rarely.

More frequently, when a player on the ice scores four goals in a single game, it is referred to as a hat trick plus one or a four-goal game.

He must score the goal four times, which must be in regular time, including overtime. A shootout goal doesn't count here.

Patrick Marleau, the winger of the San Jose Sharks, has a record of scoring four goals in a single game. On January 23, 2017, for the first time in his career, he scored four goals against the Colorado Avalanche in the third period.

Likewise, Leon Draisaitl and Dallas' Joe Pavelski also have the record of scoring four times in a single game in the history of the NHL playoffs.

Different terms exist for multiple goals scored by a player in a single game. Some are:

• Natural Hat Trick: When a player scores three goals in the first period.
• Hat trick: A player scores three times in a single game. Fans have a tradition of throwing their hats into the ice to celebrate when a player scores a hat trick.
• Double hat-trick: A player scores six goals in a single game.

These hat tricks are not compulsory or regular in any season. It only occurs in some games. In the 2017–2018 season, 81 hat tricks were recorded.

Hockey is a 2-2-1-1-1 format. The team with home-ice advantage gets to host games 1, 2, 5, and 7 while the other team gets to host 3, 4, and 6 games.

That means the opposing team gets to host games three, four, and six. Games 5, 6, and 7 are played only if required, depending on the situation.

The Stanley Cup playoff combines four best-of-seven series rounds to understand the format better. Each conference sends eight teams out of sixteen to compete in the playoffs.

A team that placed higher in the regular season or with better regular-season records gets the home-ice advantage. That team with the highest seeds will get to host the first, second, fifth, and last games of a series.

The remaining 2-3-3 format is in the NBA, where the team with home-court advantage plays the first and last two games of the series at home.

Zero in hockey is a shutout game. A goaltender is credited with a shutout and the losing team score no points.

A hockey round can end without anyone from the participating team scoring a goal. If none of the players make a score by the end of the third period, overtime starts.

If needed, a shootout is called, allowing one player at a time to attempt a goal. A goaltender who blocks the puck of the opponent team, resulting in their null character, is credited for the shutout.

Former NHL goaltender Martin Brodeur has a record of 125 shutouts in his professional playing career. Brodeur has played in 22 NHL seasons.

Regarding the games with null scores by a team in current years, the New York Rangers defeated the San Jose Sharks 1-0 in December 2021.

Previously, the Pittsburgh Penguins won by 1-0 with the Montreal Canadiens as their opponent in March 2013.
